Recordings by Johnny Cash

Album:: The Gospel Road
Label: Columbia KG-32253
Year: 1973
Producer: Larry Butler
Comment: Johnny Cash's proudest work.  This was the soundtrack to the Cash financed movie "Gospel Road." It featured many songs written by Cash and friends for the movie. It was one of the last projects JRC would do with The Statler Brothers. The vision had started with a dream by June of John on a mountain top telling the story of Jesus. Notice the cover shot.

Liner Notes

I think it was the songs more than anything else that drew us to Israel in the first place. The songs that we sang in the old church back home, the songs that have inspired me through the years....songs about Jesus...songs about the Holy Land. And though the songs in this album are not old songs, throughout the filming of "The Gospel Road", the cast and crew and I were from time to time singing and humming refrains of: "I Wont Have To Cross Jordan Alone, " "I Am Bound For The Promise Land", "Old Rugged Cross," Amazing Grace," and many other timeless inspirationals.

It was a natural thing for us to tell our story of Jesus through words and music. People ask me about Israel,....what is it like?....does it really feel like the Holy Land?...do you really feel the spirit of Jesus there?....is it really the land of miracles?...the answer is "yes." The spirit is very much alive. Possibly you will feel that spirit in these words and in this music in this album. This is the story of Jesus as we feel it, hear it and see it. May it be an inspiration to you.
