Cash Returns

5:33 AM:

And so the journey begins. The fog is lifting off the road as I head towards the Interstate leaving Sarasota, Florida. This is an exciting journey heading to New York City where I may be seeing the last public performance of Johnny Cash in an all-star tribute at the Hammerstien Ballroom. I'm really kind of lucky to have landed tickets on Ebay.com. John has been away form the stage for the past 19 months as he has battled Shy-Drager disease. Current reports have also had that he may not be up to making the trip for this event. I made a decision to be there to cheer him on one way or another. My following Cash has been a long winding road.

Inside me there is a growing excitement for a number of reasons. I think back to all the times that I have seen Mr. Cash perform and how much these performances and his music have been threaded throughout my life. My first memories of being introduced to his music were in 1967 as a nine-year-old boy. My dad had purchased for me the Folsom Prison album. Pretty radical now that I think of it. I remember playing it well until it crackled with age. Even had to go by a new copy a few years later. I brought it to school for a "Show and Tell" back in the sixth grade. I just loved the realistic feel of the music and the message it brought. My friends were long gone into the world of the Beatles, but for me it was Cash. From that day on, I looked forward to and enjoyed every album released by Mr. Cash.

As the years went by, his music became more or less a familiar friend. Things change throughout the world of a ten-year-old boy. John's music and message always remained a constant to me. Now it seems we reach a turn in the road which may be our final turn together. One last final concert. But let's see where the road has come from.....
