Merry Christmas to All

Hope all have had a wonderful Christmas. Things have been great
around the Maninblack.net household. Our little one-year old has been
running us hard all day. My five year old enjoyed seeing the Santa
footprints today leading to the tree. These was peace in our valley
today.
Merry Christmas to all the Cash fans out there who I have gotten to
speak with over the past year. To the Cashes and family....enjoy the
warmth of Jamaica and the love of each other. Thanks for keeping it
going. And as Bruce Springsteen
noted at the Cash tribute....keep the music and the message true.
Merry Christmas to all and see you in a new century of Cash music.

Cash Receives Christian Award
November 09, 1999 - Posted by Dustin
Got this news from Jean about the Christian
Living Legend Award that Johnny recently
received:
"I read on the AOL Board, that JRC received The
Christian Living Legend Award last night at The
Ryman. Is that true? If it is, it is another very
deserving award. And just think, no coverage
from TNN. He didn't get much coverage anyway
but, there will be none now. What great news...
the whole world is FINALLY realizing what i've
know for 40 years. He is truly a LIVING
LEGEND."

Johnny recently received the "Christian Living Legend Award!" A well deserved award, I should say. And, to answer your next question, yes, John and June are currently resting up in Jamaica... getting their health and energy back up to where it needs to be.

***"Hello, I'm Johnny Cash."
By Seth Mnookin
Oct. 22, 1999 | Less than a minute into "At Folsom Prison," Johnny Cash -- the Man in Black, the baddest badass in the music biz -- drawls, "I shot a man in Reno/Just to watch him die." The song is "Folsom Prison Blues," and the crowd of 2,000 convicts, a handful of armed guards and a warden or two, roars in bloodcurdling approval. The moment is surely one of the most chilling in music history. It's not that you are hearing the sound of hardened killers celebrating a music-fueled orgy of bloodlust. The audience for Cash's performance was most likely made up of petty cons busted for larceny or B&E; even in 1968, convicted murderers were not allowed to gather in the cafeteria for a couple of hours of music on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The moment is chilling because it shows that even in the dehumanizing confines of the American penal system, the 2,000 men who called Folsom home were still buying into the ideal of the romantic outlaw.
It's an ideal Cash cultivated carefully throughout his career, and never more studiously than on this release. Cash, like Hank Williams before him, bridged the divide between the sacred and the profane, dressing all in black so he would look similarly at home in a prison mess hall or a church rectory. His iconic, understated introduction -- "Hello. I'm Johnny Cash" -- sounds equally polite and menacing.
He could be humbly introducing himself to his girl's parents, or he could be making sure you know his name before he shoots you dead. Like all great introductions -- James Bond's and Dirty Harry's come to mind -- Cash's sounds at once suave and sinister.
Whether singing about junkies, killers and whores or fetishizing love and otherworldly redemption, Cash's stately baritone sounded, as the most resonant voices do, as if it were the truth, and the truth appealed to everyone from suburban Republicans to petty thieves. Johnny Cash, after all, could boast enough mainstream cachet to host a prime-time variety show -- ABC's "The Johnny Cash Show," which aired from 1969 to 1971 -- while also writing songs that served, literally, as killing music. (Gary Gilmore is infamously described in Norman Mailer's "The Executioner's Song" as using Cash to steel his nerves before he shot down a Utah gas station attendant.) In bridging this divide Cash offered something otherwise unattainable to both outlaws and straight society. To the former, Cash promised both second chances and the possibility of worldly success; to the latter, a Wild West romantic ideal that has long been a part of this country's folklore.
From the start of his career in the mid-1950s, Johnny Cash had courted an outlaw image so assiduously that when he played this hour-long, 19-song set in Folsom Prison, he could lean heavily on jail tunes without really altering his typical set list. More than half the songs are either set behind bars or describe an imminent trip to the clink. In either an ultimate display of irony or a perfect parable to describe Cash's life, the singer never served serious time.
"I have been behind bars a few times," Cash writes in the liner notes with his loping scrawl. "Sometimes of my own volition, sometimes involuntarily. Each time, I felt the same feeling of kinship with my fellow prisoners." But his time was hardly the stuff prison memoirs are made of. In 1965, hopped up on speed and popping pills to maintain his touring schedule, Cash was busted by the narc squad in El Paso, Texas. He received only a suspended sentence. The next year, he was arrested again, this time for a late-night flower-picking spree on private property.
Nonetheless, performing in front of cons -- a captive audience if there ever was one -- was clearly something Cash cherished, and something he did often and remarkably well. He did it nearly perfectly on "At Folsom Prison," one of the most powerfully visceral albums recorded, period. Americans bought the record in droves. When it was first released, in 1968, the Beatles, the Stones and the Beach Boys were all at their most psychedelic. Yet Cash turned a stark album of straight-ahead country rock into a bestseller, his first in five years. While the Beatles were singing about the love you make, Cash was earning cheers in Folsom by describing the impulsive, coked-up slaughter of his girlfriend on "Cocaine Blues": "Shot her she had five more."
This re-release -- part of Columbia's "American Milestones" series -- adds just enough extras to the previously available "At Folsom Prison" editions to make it worthwhile. On an album on which arcana -- from the cover shot of Cash's glowering, sweat-speckled face to the on-air announcements ("Sandoval, prisoner 88-419, is wanted in reception," the warden announces at one point, making it sound as if Folsom Prison is some twisted summer camp) -- has taken its place in America's musical folklore, the addition of a dozen black-and-white photos of
Cash striding the prison grounds in his trademark three-piece black suit are intensely perfect.
Three new songs are added as well. A slight, rousing version of Harlan Howard's "Busted" and a quick acoustic run-through of "Joe Bean" help round out a musical cycle that never should have been abridged. And the seven-minute version of Cash's 1963 folk ballad "The Legend of John Henry's Hammer" shows off Cash's familiarity with workingman folk tunes.
Even better, the Columbia remastering gives the music more depth. Where Luther and Carl Perkins' slashing lead guitar lines sounded slightly tinny and flat on the Folsom/San Quentin CD that has been available for years, here they sound as if they are carved in metal. And "Jackson," on which Cash is joined by his soon-to- be-wife, June Carter, is redolent in throaty swagger, with the Tennessee Three'sboom-chicka-boom driving on what remains one of recorded music's most rousing duets. You can hear every note as W.S. Holland rides his cymbals, every ounce of pressure as the Perkins boys strut their way through the set.
Johnny Cash, now hobbled by age and infirmity, will not make another masterpiece. At this point, we'll be lucky if he is ever able to perform publicly again. For several years, Cash has suffered from Shy-Drager syndrome, a nervous-system disorder similar to Parkinson's disease. On Sunday, the 67-year-old singer was admitted to Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tenn., where he is being treated for pneumonia and is listed in serious condition.
But his inability to perform now is no injury to his legacy. "At Folsom Prison" contains enough to satisfy any reasonable person, to say nothing of a gun-toting outlaw, for a lifetime. salon.com | Oct. 22, 1999

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (CNN) -- Country music legend Johnny Cash, battling a bout of pneumonia, has improved slightly, but still is listed in serious condition, hospital officials said Thursday.
Cash, 67, who has recorded more than 1,500 songs and won 10 Grammy Awards in a career spanning more than 40 years, entered Baptist Hospital in Nashville on Sunday. The hospital would not say whether he was in the intensive care unit.
Cash, one of the few musicians to be inducted into both the country and rock music halls of fame, is known for his smash hits "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk the Line." Cash was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's Grammy Awards ceremony.
He suffers from Shy-Drager syndrome, a degenerative nerve disease that attacks the nervous system in much the same way as Parkinson's disease. He has been in and out of the hospital this year.
At one time, Cash played some 200 concerts a year. However, his touring schedule has been cut back in recent years: He called off a scheduled concert lineup and a tour to promote his book, "Cash: The Autobiography," in 1997 after his disease worsened.
But he was able to return to the stage in April at an all-star concert in New York. Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Bruce Springsteen and others all dressed in black for the occasion, in tribute to the "The Man in Black."
Cash lives in Hendersonville, a town just northeast of Nashville, with his wife, June Carter Cash, also a popular country singer. He has four daughters and a son.

Review of June's Kansas Show
Sep 15 1999
Hello Cashfans,
I managed to travel to June´s show in Kansas on September 10th. The shows were a little bit shorter than in Atlanta because Johnny had stayed home in Nashville. June extended Johnny´s best wishes and love to the audience and said that he really wanted to travel with her and join her on stage, but couldn´t go due to some medical problems. But June also added that he was in good condition and is looking forward to travel to the Kansas area the next time June´s in town. June was joined on stage by The Living Circle Band including Rosie Carter and her goddaughter Monique and even her granddaughter Tiffany, whom she dedicated her selfpenned "TAL". June received a warm welcome from the audience and got several standing ovations. Johnny Western sat in the audience and was mentioned from June as being an inspiration through all the years. At the end of the show June quoted that the troup is already planning for additional shows, but the dates aren´t set yet as they depend on how Johnny´s doing. - Anyway, it was a great show that was worth seeing and travelling to. Hoping to see June and Johnny perform again in the near future.
I`d like to say a special hello to all the nice folks I met in Kansas and especially in Atlanta. It was great to meet you.
Greetings from Germany, Peter
Subject: John's Coming Recording
9/13/99
John is doing pretty good health wise. There's nothing immediately wrong with him with the exception of Shy Drager's Disease, and recording sessions on his new album are scheduled to re-commence this Tuesday. They're recording at his studio, "Cedar Hill Refuge," which is across the street from his home in a gated 80-acre compound. I'm not aware of anyone really huge playing with him on this album, but then again, I don't get updated much :) It's mainly John and his guitar, and Norman Blake on accompaniment.

As per the rumor about this being only spiritual songs and they're all recorded in a church, that is false... there is at least one song that I know of that will be recorded in a cathedral, but that's as far as I know... There are lots of spiritual songs, yes, but that's not what the entire album is composed of.
Also, there is no set title, that I am aware of.
Hope this helps,
Dustin

June's Atlanta Concert
Sun - Aug 29
Hi Cash Fans
I was fortunate enough to get to go to June's concert in Atlanta last evening. It was held at the Cotton Club which is a rock music lounge and holds about 300 max. All tickets were General Admission and said concert was at 8PM, and wanting to get the best spot to see the concert, we arrived about 6:30. But we were not the first in line...Womaninblack (who posts in the Forum) and Cashfan (who also posts in the Forum) had arrived just minutes before us. Val had come from England just for the concert and Cashfan had come from Orlando for the same purpose. A little later, Peter from Germany, arrived and chatted for a while. He is here for 2 weeks but planned his trip around the concert. He is hoping to go the Kansas City too. time flew as we chatted, and the line grew in volume. At 8PM, they opened the doors and we did get front row seats. (Chairs had been brought in just for this event) Val chose to stand at the stage (right at June's feet as it turned out and June acknowledged her being there when she came on stage). At 9PM a local singer opened the show and sang 10 or 12 original songs which were fairly entertaining. Then just about 10PM June appeared to a standing O ! She sang many of the songs from Press On and is in fine voice. Strong as ever and just as entertaining and humorous as she has always been. She has kinfolk here in Atlanta and talked to (and about) some of them throughout the show and then one joined the band on the guitar and she called a younger member of the family in to sing with her. In family traditon, the kissin-cousin got up on the stage and sang along with June in a couple of songs from the new CD. Then June talked about John a little...and out he came!!!!!!!!!!! To hoops and hollers and stomping feet and whistles and applause....more noise than I ever thought 300 folks could make. They sang Jackson (very lively) and a couple of songs from June's album. John returned to the stage to join in Will the Circle Be Unbroken..and everyone in the house joined in as well. John Carter was there and does a great job of supporting and looking after all the details. We went to the back door after the show to wave them off...and low and behold, the limo pulled out...and drove around to pick them up at the front door. disappointing, but I'm still in Paradise enjoying the after-glow of the music and seeing my all time favorite performers one more time. Oops...sorry for the lengthy post.
Oh yes, Clipperwiz (from Florida) and her sister (from California) were there as well. Great meeting and chatting with everyone.

News About Folsom Prison
Just wanted everyone to know that Sony Nashville is reissuing a new improved CD of Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison. It will be in stores Oct. 19th. Here are some details:
>JOHNNY CASHAT FOLSOM PRISON
It was a sunny cool day on January 13, 1968 when Johnny Cash performed a concert at Folsom Prison. Cash's imposing bass-baritone is in front of the bumping, "boom-chicka-boom" two-beat that was the hallmark of the Tennessee Three, led by his longtime guitarist Luther Perkins (who died that same year in a tragic fire). Also on board for the crackling set were Cash's new wife June Carter Cash, The Statler Brothers quartet, and the legendary Carl Perkins. There had never been a recording session quite like the one that produced this album.
Playing to 2000 inmates -- and, of course, their well-armed guards-- at a notoriously tough California penitentiary, Cash tapped right into the tension in the hall. Having been through a scrape or two with the law in his younger, wilder days, he offered a number of songs that resonated with this audience. But then he broke that tension with the gallows humor of "25 Minutes To Go," the comic vignette of his "Dirty Old Egg-Sucking Dog," and a tale of woe concerning how he got the big kiss-off ("Flushed From The Bathroom of Your Heart").
HIGHLIGHTS:
--Previously unpublished photos by reknowned photographer Jim Marshall
--Cash's original, hand-written, Grammy-winning liner notes
--Additional liner notes by Nashville maverick Steve Earle
--Three previously unissued bonus tracks: "Joe Bean," and "The Legend of John Henry's Hammer," and the Harlan Howard-penned "Busted."

John & June at the Carter Fold
Aug 11, 1999
The show at the Carter Fold was great. John, June an the Living Circle all sounded great.....just not loud enough. June performed early in the afternoon about 4pm by herself. John and Tom T. Hall joined her on the evening show. It was neat hearing classics like Folsom Prison Blues and Daddy Sang Bass performed accoustically.
I did get a chance to meet Dave Roe, Johnny's bassist since 1992. He was a very nice man and he sure does know how to play the upright bass. I also got a chance to talk to Peggy Knight and she said that pianist Earl Poole Ball's mother passed away a few weeks ago. She also said that he has been playing somewhere in Texas.
Remembered For Wonderful Soprano, Historic Contributions
by Michael Gray
Anita Carter, the youngest daughter of Maybelle Carter and said to be the best singer of the Carter Sisters, a long illness.
Her sister, June Carter Cash, and her brother-in-law, Johnny Cash, were reportedly by her side when she died. She had suffered for some time from rheumatoid arthritis, but the cause of death was not immediately known.
"She was probably the best singer of all the Carter Sisters and perhaps even better than Mother Maybelle," said music historian and Carter Family annotator Charles Wolfe. "She was really the most gifted, raw singer of them all. She had an absolutely wonderful voice. She was extremely versatile with it, proving herself able to experiment with a number of different types of music -- folk, straight country and rock'n' roll."
The Carter Sisters entry in the Country Music Hall of Fame's Encyclopedia of Country Music also calls attention to Anita's crystal clear soprano: "Helen, the most capable instrumentalist, played accordion; June, the best comedienne and performer, was on autoharp; and Anita, the soprano and best singer, handled the bass (sometimes standing on her head to play)."
Born Ina Anita Carter, March 31, 1933, the youngest of Maybelle and Ezra Carter's three daughters made her first public appearance in 1937 with her sisters on The Popeye Club on radio station WOPI in Bristol, Va. She sang "Beautiful Brown Eyes." Two years later the three sisters joined the original Carter Family (A.P., his wife Sara and sister-in-law Maybelle) on the border station XERA out of Del Rio, Texas.
Following the folding of the original Carter Family in 1943, Mother Maybelle formed a new group with her trio of daughters. Billed simply as Mother Maybelle & the Carter Sisters, the quartet soon found radio work on WLRN in Richmond, Va. In 1946, they moved over to the Old Dominion Barn Dance where they remained until 1947. From Richmond the group traveled to Knoxville, Tenn., and joined the cast of the Tennessee Barndance. While in Knoxville, they added guitarist Chet Atkins, who remained with the group until 1951.
In 1948, the group released their first recording, "The Kneeling Drunkard's Plea," for RCA Victor Records. One year later, they moved on to Red Foley's Ozark Jubilee broadcast over KWTO in Springfield, Mo. In 1950, Mother Maybelle & the Carter Sisters joined the cast of WSM's Grand Ole Opry and took up residence in Nashville two years later.
In 1955, RCA promoted Anita as a pop performer as a part of the short-lived group 'Nita, Rita & Ruby with Rita Robbins and Ruby Wright (daughter of Kitty Wells and Johnnie Wright) while also recording Anita as a solo country singer.
Performing with her family group, Anita played dates with Elvis Presley in 1956 and 1957. "I've been told that Elvis, at one point, had quite a crush on Anita, and she was not interested in him," Wolfe says. "I remember she had a great picture of the two of them, where Elvis is holding her in his arms and looking very smitten."
Mother Maybelle & the Carter Sisters joined the Johnny Cash road show in 1961, and they were regulars on Cash's network TV series in 1969. (June Carter and Johnny Cash married in 1968).
In addition to being a member of country music's "first family," Anita also made a name for herself with a string of memorable duets. In 1951, she scored a pair of Top 5 duets with Hank Snow: "Bluebird Island" and "Down the Trail of Achin' Hearts." A 19-year-old Anita traded vocals with Hank Williams in 1952 on "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still In Love With You)" on Kate Smith's network television program. Additionally, she and Waylon Jennings made it into the Top 5 in 1968 with "I Got You."
After Maybelle's death in 1978, Anita and her sisters were dedicated to preserving and carrying on the rich musical legacy which they inherited.
Helen Carter Jones died in June 1998. June Carter Cash, 70, is now the last surviving member of the second generation of the Carter Family. "The Carters are to country music what the Kennedys are to politics," maintains Wolfe. "Every time we lose somebody from a dynasty like this it diminishes us all, and it diminishes country music. It's very tragic that we've lost two Carters now within a period of about a year."
Services for Anita Carter are to be held 2 p.m. Sunday outside of Nashville at First Baptist Church, Hendersonville. Survivors include a son, Jay Davis, and a daughter, Lorrie Bennett.
It is with great sadness that we report the following. Anita's angelic voice will be missed.

Carter Family Loses Youngest Sister
One of the original members of Mother Maybelle and the Carter Family, Anita Carter, died yesterday at her home. Her sister, June Carter Cash, and brother-in-law, Johnny Cash, were at her bedside.
The cause of death could not be determined immediately, but the 66 year-old Opry member had been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. Anita was the youngest of the three Carter sisters, but started singing with the Carter Family in 1938, prior to sisters Helen and June.
As a duet partner with Hank Snow, Anita Carter enjoyed top 5 success in 1951, but she never completely abandoned her stand-up bass and soprano role in the Carter Family. The group became Opry members in 1950, then toured with Elvis Presley (1956-57) and Johnny Cash (1961).
Ms. Carter is survived by her sister June, son Jay Davis and daughter Laurie Bennett.

We are working on doing the entire site over. I realize that everything is behind (orders, mail, phone messages ) etc..I keep apologizing, but I really can't help it.
Whatever I have has progressed rapidly and I am having trouble keeping up. I have an appointment real soon with the"Miracle Doctor of Neurology" in TN. ....(yeah, been there, done that...we'll see.....)Maybe I'll be able to function better soon. If not, I will have to have help or quit.
Today I drove for the first time in ages. It was quite a trip. I took dad and Dustin to the farm (an hour away) and got caught in the middle of an enormous rain/thunderstorm. I was following my husband Jimmy Tittle ....he was driving dad's Range Rover...I drove dad's Benz. I swear, dad is still so funny..I had to really concentrate on driving to stay on the road because of the rain and from laughing at dad. ( another funny driving story for the next newsletter!)

MUSIC REVIEW; Cash Clan Relives Old Times and Sings Old Favorites
By ANN POWERS
''Sing!'' June Carter Cash yelled ferociously at the audience in the Bottom Line on Thursday night as she led another chorus of ''Will the Circle Be Unbroken,'' an American standard written by her uncle A. P. Carter. It took only one prompting to produce a joyful noise from listeners dumbstruck by their luck at witnessing this family gathering.
One of country music's matriarchs was spending the night reminiscing, with her husband, Johnny Cash, occasionally lending support. Mr. Cash, looking stronger than he has in a while, joined in on A. P. Carter's hymn and shared the microphone with Ms. Cash on two earlier duets.
''I knew when I heard it that it was mine and her song,'' he said as the pair began ''Far Side Banks of Jordan,'' a Terry Smith composition about love lasting into the afterlife. The performance was poignant because Mr. Cash is publicly facing down mortality as he copes with a degenerative neurological disorder.
The mood lightened when the couple kicked into the peppery 1967 hit ''Jackson.'' Mr. Cash wiggled his legs Elvis-style and Ms. Cash responded by flinging back her long brown hair and loosely shimmying. Their playfulness grew romantic when Mr. Cash ended the song by enveloping his wife in a gentle kiss.
The comments of Ms. Cash about following Mr. Cash's directive throughout their 32 years of marriage might have made a feminist cringe, but she made it clear that her life has been artistically and personally rich. Her five-piece acoustic band included her son, the guitarist John Carter Cash, and a daughter, the singer Rosie Carter. John Carter Cash gently guided the music's old-timey arrangements, adjusting to his mother's sometimes wavering pace as she played autoharp and sang in a plain alto with a nicely sharp edge. Her singing flowed from her storytelling, as if her memories were naturally transforming into music.
The set list, mostly culled from Ms. Cash's new solo album, ''Press On,'' (Small Hairy Dog/Risk Records) featured classics by country's pioneering Carter Family, whose legacy Ms. Cash has maintained, and warm, wacky originals.
One of the liveliest of Ms. Cash's songs was ''Tiffany Anastasia Lowe,'' about a grandaughter pursuing an acting career. As her band rollicked through the simple music, Ms. Cash fretted that Ms. Lowe might associate with a certain questionable Hollywood honcho. ''Quentin Tarantino makes his women wild and mean,'' she sang.
Ms. Cash prefaced each song with rambling anecdotes about her eventful life. She mentioned past and present friends from Elvis Presley to Tom Petty, but kin received her warmest attention. For one song, she even had the multi-instrumentalist Laura Weber play a guitar once owned by Ms. Cash's mother, Maybelle Carter, one of country music's greatest guitarists.
Raising a circle that could encompass departed elders, straying grandkids and even fondly mentioned ex-sons-in-law (including the country stars Marty Stuart and Rodney Crowell and Tiffany's dad, the rocker Nick Lowe), Ms. Cash brought a perspective to family that was old-fashioned but flexible, like her music.
David Olney, who opened the show, also negotiated the divide between tradition and modernity in songs that often took up historic themes. His biblical songs stood out, especially an imagined plea from David to Bathsheba that might have been sung by Johnny Cash in his rough and rowdy days recording for Sun Records in the 1950's.

Carter Family Fold - August 7
Yes, June is defintely planning to perform at the festival being held at The Carter Family Fold on August 6th and 7th. She and Johnny still have the house that Matt spoke of. It is at the foot of the Clinch Mountains.
Unfortunately June's date of July 28, at The Cotton Club in Atlanta, had to be postponed. Looks like it will now be mid August. I will post the new date as soon as Lou Rbin clears it. Thanks, and sorry for any confusion.

Summary: Bottom Line shows
It was great to see Johnny and June perform in New York. The Bottom Line shows were even better than the show at LA. June is a great entertainer in any way. Johnny joined her on both evenings playing "Far Side Banks of Jordan" and "Jackson" and got a standing ovation. He looked good and seemed to enjoy his performance very much. It was kinda unusual to see Johnny be a part of June's concert. After the show Johnny told us that he is working on a new album with Rick Rubin in the "American Recordings" style manner. He also seems to be excited about the upcoming rerelease of "Folsom" which according to Sony producer Jeff Jones is postponed to September. Johnny introduced us to the producer of the "big" movie about his life. (Sorry I cannot remember his name.) It must be a thrill for him to see this project on the way. I hope that June is gonna put on some more shows in the future. It's a show worth seeing. Using the same "simple and honest" approach as Johnny did on his "American Recordings" her album is acclaimed by both audiences and critics. It's good to see that June is recognized now as an artist of her own.

Summary: Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison
This album, and its track listing, are still listed at the Legacy Records website. The release date has been delayed, but it is shown as scheduled for release on August 31, 1999.
I have e-mailed Sony and asked that they consider using this time to go ahead and include the remaining song recorded at this show at the prison. I cannot understand why they would include every song except one, a song that has never been released in any form at that. Perhaps with a little more prodding from a few more of us, they will look at doing this. Let them hear from you!
Even More New Cash - "The Legend of Jesse James"!
This star-studded concept album that tells the story of Jesse James in song (Johnny Cash portrays Frank James) features Roseanne Cash, Charlie Daniels, Emmylou Harris, and others is scheduled to be reissued by Mercury later this summer.

Review of June's Bottom Line Show (NY)
Hello to all you Cash fans out there, wanted to report to you about tonight's Bottom Line June Carter Cash show..it was great! June looked and sounded really good, so did John Carter, the entire band was excellent...and yes, John came out and sang with June, Far Banks of the Jordan, and also, yes of course, Jackson. He came out to help in the finale too,of Will the Circle Be Unbroken. As I know all of you can imagine, it was really a pleasure to see and hear him again. You know how you can be really happy and really sad at the same time? That's how I felt. Anyway, wish you all could have been there! The audience was great, gave John a standing ovation (of course) as soon as he came out, and didn't really sit down again till he was thru. John looked pretty good, and he sounded great. THe audience loved June too and gave her a very warm reception. A happy evening for this fan!

Summary: Reply to Kay and Article from Newspaper about Cash
Hi All
I lucked out and found a small article on Johnny Cash in the Lakeland Florida Ledger Newspaper for June 29th.
Nashville Notes by Jack Hurst.
If you're wondering what Johnny Cash is doing in Jamaica, since he's gone into retirement, well, Marty Stuart, who visited him not too long ago, supplies a report.
"When I went down there, the biggest order of the day was getting on the golf cart and going down to the bottom of the hill and stealing golf balls," Stuart says with a laugh. "he steals golf balls off the rich guys' golf course."
Stuart admits he had worried about Cash, who does a closing monologue on Sturart's big new CD "The Pilgrim" (and Stuart played a role in the recording of June Carter Cash's career retrospective, "Press On").
"I thought, 'I bet he's going crazy down there because he can't be Johnny Cash,' " Stuart says of his ex-father-in-law. "I told him that, and he said, 'Don't you worry about that, I do not miss being Johnny Cash. And the minute I want to be him, I put on a black coat and I'm Johnny Cash.'
"It was great to go down there and see him and June holding hands and him out picking flowers for June and stealing golf balls and sitting by the sea and just singing a song if he wants to, reading books, taking naps. I mean for me to impose 'Hey, you should get back out there and run around the world again,' that's like sticking a gun to Mickey Mantle's or Hank Aaron's head and saying, 'Hit a grand slam every time you step up to the plate.' "We shold honor him for the grand slams he's hit."

Summary: Hold On!! More Cash is on the Way!
I just received an e-mail from the great John L. Smith, discographer to the stars (and, most importantly, to Johnny Cash). His new discography has just been released, and although it may seem expensive, it is a wonderfully indispensible reference tool!! It has a song by song listing of every song ever recorded by the Man.
He was also kind enough to relay some very exciting news about upcoming Cash releases. Get ready, take a deep breath, and read on:
In addition to "Rockabilly Blues," the reissue of "At Folsom Prison," and "The Holy Land," Mr. Smith says that Bear Family is finally responding to our pleadings and is planning:
1. A boxed set of cds called "The Mercury Years"
2. A reissue of "The Johnny Cash Children's Album" with several previously unreleased tracks
3. A boxed set of live concert performances
Expect these gems to begin surfacing in late summer.
As if that is not enough, he also reports a 3 cd offering from Reader's Digest called, "The Legendary Johnny Cash," with material hand picked for release by Mr. Cash and with tracks never before on cd.
I cannot believe we have so much to look forward to! My deepest thanks to John L. Smith for taking the time to pass this information along so that I could relay it to you.

Sheryl Crow and June Carter Cash will hook up for the first time this Sunday (June 27) for an acoustic set on Vin Scelsa's Idiot's Delight, a six-hour radio show on New York rock station WNEW. In addition to the WNEW appearance, Cash will hit up Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee on Monday (June 28). Yesterday was June's birthday! I called to wish her a happy one. I guess you really don't keep up with calendars when you're in Paradise. Dad and June thought her birthday was Tuesday.
She said dad woke up singing HAPPY BIRTHDAY to her, brought her coffee, flowers, they went out for lunch and a fruit punch. Went shopping a bit... wondered why no one called to wish her a happy birthday......HA! I guess dad was busy again YESTERDAY doing a rerun.
For all you Marty Stuart fans and collectors of all Johnny Cash recordings; here's one to add to your collection. Marty has a new CD out called THE PILGRIM. It is a GREAT concept CD with guests such as George Jones, Emmy Lou Harris, dad, and other Greats. It's also some of the best writing Marty has ever done.
In the CD cover, there is an advertisement for the photo book Marty has coming out in September 1999. It's a collection of photos he's taken over the years, and dad is a big part of it.
You'll be happy to know all your letters, calls and e-mails accomplished something pretty exciting. TNN is doing a special "The Life And Times Of the Cash Family," based on Cindy Cash's family scrapbook. Tapings start today, but I don't have an air date. I will let you know by Newsletter and on THE NEWS at the Cash Stuff site as soon as I get more information.
We have added new forums to the CASH STUFF site! Now you have a place to TRADE and a separate JUNE CARTER CASH and JOHNNY CASH board. We are also adding a WANTED board for all of you looking for certain items. Dustin will be adding a direct button to the Main page today, but for now you get there by clicking on THE NEWS.

NOW......I have good news and bad news about the winner of the TRIBUTE contest. The good news is : I HAVE A WINNER! The bad news is: I don't know who it is!!! (I never claimed to be the brightest Cash family member ) I had 3 judges, so I blacked out names (DUH) on all the entries to keep from being influenced in any way. NOW....I need to hear from the person that Started out their tribute this way:
Date : Whenever Johnny Wants
Place : Cinnamon Hill, Jamaica
So Johnny can be comfortable
Host : Jane Seymour
Does this ring a bell????????
I will not bore you any more with my health reports in this newsletter. Several of you had asked for updates, so I took the lazy way out by putting it in the newsletter, but I feel it's inappropriate. I have written an update so if you want to know how things are going, just e-mail me, and I'll let you know.
Please keep June's sister, Anita on your prayer list. She has been very ill the last few months and has us all concerned. If you would like to send her a card to let her know you are thinking about her, send it to my attention and I'll forward them on.

A word of encouragement is sometimes the best medicine. I was reminded of that yesterday when someone sent me this :
A group of frogs were traveling through the woods, and two of them fell into a deep pit. All the other frogs gathered around the pit. When they saw how deep the pit was, they told the two frogs that they were as good as dead. The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump out of the pit with all of their might. The group of frogs kept telling them to stop because they were as good as dead. Finally, one of the frogs took heed to what the other frogs were saying and gave up. He fell down and died. The second frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and just die. He jumped even harder and finally made it out. You see, this frog was deaf, unable to hear what the others were saying. He thought they were encouraging him the entire time. This story teaches a lesson.... Proverbs 18:21 There is the power of life and death in the tongue. An encouraging word to someone who is down can lift them up and help them make it through the day. A destructive word to someone who is down can be what it takes to kill them. Be careful of what you say. Speak life to those who cross your path. The power of words ... an encouraging word can go such a long way. May your words be a blessing to someone today!
Have a GREAT rest of the week!

Summary: "I Still Miss Someone" - The Short Film
Just thought I would post a note to let everyone know how the movie fared at The Nashville Independent Film Festival last week-end.
It was shown three times, all three showings were SOLD OUT, to standing room only capacity!! It broke a 30 year record at the film festival!
It was the ONLY film chosen to be placed in the archives for the State of Tennessee this year, out of 600 entries.
The film was given two awards, "The Tennessee Spirit Award - Best Short Film" as well as "The Tennessee Arts Commission Purchase Award".
The film was written by Mark Collie and John Lloyd Miller, directed by John Lloyd Miller, produced by Selby Miller and William Dance.
Mark Collie was presented with a check for $500.00 and chose to donate it directly to the NATIONAL DYSAUTONOMIA RESEARCH FOUNDATION. N.D.R.F. is dedicated to research and finding a cure for Shy-Drager Syndrome. I think that was a great gesture on Mark's part!
I know you all join with me in sending congratulations to Mark, John, Selby and William for their hard work!

Hi Everyone,
I haven't been online much the last couple of weeks, so once again..I am
behind on answering e-mail, voicemail and snail mail.
My health tests came out okay, and I was put on a medication that really
helped the tremors BUT made me totally unable to function. I quit taking it
Wednesday and have had my tremors since Thursday morning.
Once again, I am asking for your patience while I try to get caught up. I
know it must be frustrating for you all waiting on orders and/or replies to
your questions, but please bear with me.
The Tribute winners will be announced by the end of the week, and we will
have a new contest ( as promised ) following that announcement.
Dad and June are doing fine. I talked to both of them Friday, and they are
doing well. ( They are out of the States right now, enjoying warm weather
without Tennessee's smothering humidity. )
Reminder....June has a birthday coming up the 23rd of this month, so if you'd
like to send a card, here is the address:
700 Johnny Cash Parkway
Hendersonville, TN 37075
All cards will be forwarded to her, but PLEASE don't send them to Cash Stuff.
I would just take them to the office for Kelly to forward, and it creates
more work for both of us.
Her new CD "Press On" is doing quite well! For a schedule of her appearances,
be sure to check out www.junecartercash.com.
Some of you have E-mailed me wondering if TNT is planning on making a
soundtrack CD out of the music that was performed on the tribute. I heard
that it is in the works, but I have no details as of now on how it will be
marketed.
Dad is working on two projects right now that he is very excited about.
Details will be released later, but one of the projects IS a new CD!
I wish you all a great week, and hope that spring in your part of the world
is as beautiful as it is here in Tennessee.

Hi Mike
I'm going to be interviewing John some time during the next few days. Do you have any questions you REALLY want answered? If so, now's your chance. I can't promise to ask them -- I have my own questions, I don't know how long he'll be able to talk, etc. -- but it's worth a try, don't you think? It might also be fun to ask visitors to the site if they have any questions, too.
This is all happening under time pressure, naturally, so (with apologies) please be swift.
All the best,

Rosie, who sang backup for June, encouraged by her mother, broke a show biz rule by singing her own, blues version of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" after June did the same song her way.
Rosie, June's daughter by EDWIN "RIP" NIX, like other performing family members of her generation, has adopted June's maiden name and is recording a CD of her own as ROSIE CARTER.
While JOHNNY CASH was nowhere in sight, everyone from Cash's niece, KELLY HANCOCK to band member EARL "POOLE" BALL (who seemed to double as bouncer) turned out. (June told the crowd that she invited her husband, but that he had been doing some recording and decided he'd rather rest.) Kelly told me her uncle, while vital enough to be recording again, has not been able to sign autographs in two years. Another Cash intimate offered this perspective: "Johnny has his good days and his bad days and from now on it's always going to be that way."

Hi Everyone,
I hope this finds you all well.
I apologize (seems I do that a LOT) for this letter getting out to you later than I said it would. Life is extremely hectic and will be until this week is over.
THEN the winner will be announced for the TRIBUTE contest. PLEASE be patient with me on this one. I know a lot of you have e-mailed asking, but there are a lot of entries and you are all so imaginative!!
I've also had a lot of other e-mails regarding my health. (For those of you that haven't asked and wished I'd stop mentioning it....skip this part ) :-)I had 2 more tests yesterday. HOPEFULLY the LAST two. An MRI of the brain, and an EEG. I have been feeling some better and am functioning okay for the time being. I will have my results next week. I appreciate all the kind e-mails and well wishes. Some of you that are reading this are being haunted with serious physical problems, so I feel like a wimp for any past whining I have done. Forgive me for that...
Dad and June are back in the States and doing quite well.
June has been very busy with rehearsals for the upcoming shows she has later this month. (Info will be posted at CASH STUFF soon). She is also running back and forth checking on her ailing sister, Anita.
Dad is busy being dad. He is feeling better and buzzing around town again.( Just be careful if you're in the area....his driving is still the same) SCARY.Driving in the car with him has always been an adventure. Years ago dad drove Rosanne and I all the way from Virginia to Nashville. We had all the "flu" symptoms you can have without the fever. As I recall, we were both crying and begging him to let one of us drive so he could "rest". It didn't work.....
Have a good week, and I'll be sending another letter in about a week announcing the winner!

Johnny Cash TNT Tribute Breaks Network Record
================================
Anyone out there who thinks Johnny Cash isn't still a big draw had
better check out the Nielsen ratings during the TNT's An All-Star
Tribute to Johnny Cash.
The television special (allstar, March 17), which premiered on
April 18, was the highest rated and most watched concert premiere in the
network's history. Performances by Sheryl Crow, Bob Dylan, Wyclef Jean,
Dave Matthews, Bruce Springsteen, U2, and Chris Isaak, among others,
helped fuel the telecast to a 3.1 rating, leaving the previous record of
1.9 for A Very Special Christmas in Washington, D.C. in 1998 in the
dust. TNT hopes their next concert extravaganza, the upcoming Bob Marley
special (allstar, April 6), can put up similar numbers.
The network will show an encore performance of An All-Star
Tribute to Johnny Cash on April 22 at 10 p.m.

Hi Everyone,
Well, tonight is THE night! The Johnny Cash Tribute is on TNT (The Turner Network) at 7:00 CST! Get your tissues ready, unplug the telephone, and sit back for an INCREDIBLE show! Sheryl Crow and Willie Nelson "kick it off" with a great duet of "Jackson" and it just gets better by the minute.
Unfortunately, Rosanne isn't able to sing due to a throat condition, but she narrates a very poignant segment. ( Please add her to your prayer list)The entire show is excellent, but another highlight is a trio of three women that are incredible on their own, but together sound like a band of angels. Mary Chapin Carpenter, EmmyLou Harris and Sheryl Crow sing "Flesh And Blood." June Carter Cash sings her self-penned "Ring Of Fire" accompanied by Marty Stuart on guitar and Jason Carter (no relation) on fiddle. Be sure to tape this show...you'll want to watch it over and over again!
Johhny and June are back in the States and doing well. June's sister Anita is in poor health, so please add her to your list of people to pray for.June's new CD "Press On" is now available at your local music store. Be sure to pick up a copy! I may be prejudiced, but her duet with Johnny "The Far Side Banks Of Jordan" really got to me. Check it out!
Now, regarding Cash Stuff Etc..
Some of you are a little upset with us because we are behind. PLEASE accept our apologies; ALL ORDERS WILL BE SHIPPED OUT NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY OF THIS WEEK. Keep in mind: The Cash Stuff Tribute contest deadline is creeping up! The last day for entering has to be postmarked May 1, 1999, so get your entry
in!
Jimmy Tittle update: Currently, Jimmy is NOT playing at Wolfy's on Broadway.

CASH MAY HEAD BACK INTO STUDIO AGAIN
JOHNNY CASH may soon record another album - his first since being diagnosed with the progressive nervous disorder Shy-Drager syndrome.
The revelation comes in an interview with the USA Today newspaper, just after the 67-year-old country star played his first concert in 19 months as part of a television tribute to him.
"I haven't been motivated to write songs," Cash says. "I've looked at lists of songs; I've looked at lyrics; I've looked at books of songs; and I've listened to songs, tapes, CDs and LPs that people have sent me. I've marked them carefully and kept my list. I've got some really good songs that I feel very, very optimistic about. And the couple that I'm writing I feel very optimistic about."
Cash is rumoured to re-uniting with producer RICK RUBIN, who has overseen his last two albums, including 'Unchained', which won the 1997 Grammy for best country album. He is planning to record in Tennessee andCalifornia. He is also about to record 400 Scripture passages for a talking Bible to be released in July.
In the interview Cash also speaks about the
difficulties in taking part in the TV concert earlier this month, and
of his struggles with his disease and his faith in God. I've felt
like there were pieces of me falling off as I walked along every once
in a while. I think a lot of people thought that, too. They'd see
Johnny Cash walking, and they'd see if there were any pieces of him
falling off. I'm afraid toargue with God like Job did. But I do
challenge him. We've got a right to do that. He said, 'Let us reason
together.'And I reason with him. Sometimes the conversation gets a
little heated."

JUNE TO APPEAR ON CROOK AND CHASE - June is taping Crook & Chase (TNN) this Friday, March 26, 1999. I understand it will air later that same day. She plans to perform one of the songs from her soon tobe released CD "PRESS ON."
RUMORS OF DEMISE ARE JUST PLAIN CRAZY - In answer to all of the emails we have received, and the newspaper articles from overseas, about Johnny Cash being in very poor health -- I am happy to dispel such rumor as FICTION. Johnny and June are back home in Nashville now and are doing well, looking forward to the TNT Tribute as are we all.
MORE NEWS - JOHNNY: We all miss THE SPOKEN WORD. When Thomas Nelson stopped distributingthe reading of the bible on tape, everyone was devastated. Well, we will have something NEW this year thathopefully will satisfy those interested in Johnny Cash's reading of verses from the Bible... ~

Cash Grammy

Found the following today about the Grammy Award (in case you didnt see it)
Johnny Cash was hailed as "the original man in black" Monday night as he
received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award. Cash was one of nine
recipients of special honors during a Grammy Week function at the
California Science Museum. NARAS president/CEO Michael Greene described
the Nashville legend as "tender, soft, dreamy," yet "tough, hard,
gritty, difficult." Cash's wife, June Carter, accepted the honor on his
behalf, saying, "He's doing really well and feeling good." Cash, who has
Shy-Drager syndrome, which attacks the nervous system, remained at their
home in Jamaica. (The Tennessean)

Summary: Information.....AND Thank you
To all you sweeties that have sent your good wishes, thoughts and encouraging words! I have received a lot of helpful e-mails and I REALLY appreciate all of you.
Talked to dad again yesterday, and he is doing quite well. He is sitting in paradise, but loves to watch movies on his VCR at night, and has watched everything he has. IF anyone wants to send a card or a video for his birthday...I have a package going out to him the middle of the week. ( It will be a little late, but he won't care..he knows I have had a bad week ) Dad loves Westerns, Comedies, Army/ War, Suspense and thrillers. He really likes Antonio Banderas, but he has all his films...he does NOT like Jim Carrey films. He also does not like to watch himself.... I'm certainly not soliciting gifts for dad, but several of you have asked me how to get a gift to him or a card...send it in
care of me if you want to send something.

I just read on the Higwaymen-chatgroup that on March 31, 1999, Johnny Cash will be honored by the Memphis Chapter of the NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences) with the Governor's Award at the Pyramide in Memphis. Great news to me, if it can be confirmed.

HarperCollinsPublishers in the UK will be publishing the above book for retail in the UK, Commonwealth and Europe on the 1st March 1999. Would you consider also including the details for this version on the site as many of those accessing your site will be European and therefore unable to buy the US version?
The details are pub date 1st March 1999, price £20.00 (hardback) ISBN 0 00 274 025 7. Also, in the list of books on the 'Books' page it may be an idea to give the book its full title 'Cash: The autobiography' as it is important that fans know that it was written by the man himself.
